GOLD CIRRUS
1988 • Gold • 📍 RH55
Gold Cirrus. A mid-engined sportscar that’s rarer than a McLaren F1? Meet the Gold Cirrus, a sportscar designed and built in Surrey in 1991 by renowned Hot-Rod designer Nick Butler. It is a bit of fantastic engineering with a steel tube chassis, a composite body, a targa top, all-wheel-drive, a five-speed manual gearbox and a mid-mounted 3.5-litre Rover V8. Only two or three were made, depending on who you ask. It’s wild, whacky and really rather cool. In the 1970s a British custom car builder called Nick Butler was winning awards for his amazing Hot Rods with evocative names like Andromeda and Revenge. Pictures can be found on his website here: https://www.nick-butler.co.uk/automotive . In 1980 Nick was commissioned by Wolfrace wheels to build a stunning promotional vehicle wearing, and named after their new style of wheel, the Sonic. These “pepper pot” wheels were used on the early 80s sporty Fords like the Fiesta XR2 and Capri 2.8i amongst other cars. By this time Nick Butler’s creations had built him a strong reputation for both visionary automotive designs and the his skills in turning them into reality. So in 1982 he was given backing by investors to start the Gold Motor Company and he began work on CIrrus. The goal was to develop a cutting edge British sports car to combine all the features and qualities which a keen driver would want in a compact, lightweight vehicle. Nick spent around five years hand-crafting the prototype Cirrus to the highest specific The Gold Cirrus is a triumph of bespoke Nick Butler design and engineering, which comes together in a car with a stylish body and sublime handling. This is not a fibreglass copy-cat bodyshell bolted onto a donor vehicle chassis, it was designed from scratch and built from the ground up. The prototype body is low and sleek, enhanced by the pop-up headlights and lack of air intake at the front. The rear deck includes a spoiler which is also the area where the car’s aerodynamic profile creates higher air pressure to feed into the engine bay for cooling and induction. This car is also the version with extended wheel arches giving it more curvaceous wings and a wider rear track The car’s ride is compliant with good body control, while the balanced all-wheel drive traction inspires confidence in both dry and wet conditions. The packaging is very efficient, given the short 4 metre length and what is packed under the skin: behind the driver is a fuel injected 3500cc Rover V8 (from the Rover SD1 engine line), This has been rotated 180 degrees with the radiator at the very back of the car. An engine driven fan pushes air from intakes on the rear deck through the radiator and through the rear grille. But at cruising speed the cooling is boosted by the low pressure area behind the car, which helps to suck the hot air out. This clever aerodynamic enhancement is conceptually similar to the radical rear end design on Gordon Murray’s T50 fan car . Up front is a full sized spare wheel and enough space to stow the twin “targa” roof panels when weather permits. In between there are twin (linked) fuel tanks straddling the two drive shafts of the clever AWD system. The passenger compartment is snug and low but the supportive Recaro seats are excellent. The footwell is quite tight and there is little space to rest the left foot when not needed for the clutch so small shoes are preferable. Visibility is good at the front and sides but rear view is compromised by the spoiler and that bulge over that V8 which sits up because of the limited slip differential underneath. The targa roof panels can be removed separately courtesy of simple lever locks, and the rear window also folds down to add a cabrio wind-in-the-hair feel and soundtrack. The chassis is constructed from square section tubular steel, which is very rigid and the suspension includes 6 Koni dampers (2 for each rear wheel) with rose jointing. The Rover V8 is known to be less lively than many other contemporary motors and suits cruising than rapid acceleration, although it can sing through the gears when required. Sadly, despite such positive press and publicity, the company struggled to compete in a difficult market and in 1992 the production car business was closed down.
